If you’ve spent more than a few minutes researching the Algarve, you’ve likely come across Benagil Cave… that spectacular sea cave with a perfectly round skylight, golden sandstone walls, and a beach tucked inside. It’s one of the most famous natural landmarks in Portugal, and for good reason!
Located just east of Carvoeiro, this magical spot draws thousands of visitors a year. But here’s the thing: most people don’t experience it the right way. If you really want that “wow” moment, you have to be smart about how – and when – you go.
The legend & geology behind the Carvoeiro Benagil Cave
Locally known as Algar de Benagil, this natural wonder was sculpted over millions of years by the persistent force of Atlantic waves crashing into the Algarve’s soft limestone cliffs. The result? A colossal domed chamber with an open ceiling (called a chimney) that lets in streams of sunlight, creating a spotlight effect that feels almost otherworldly.
The cave wasn’t always a tourist hotspot—it was once a quiet spot known mostly to local fishermen. But with the rise of social media and drone photography, it exploded in popularity over the last decade, becoming an iconic image of the Algarve coastline.
Why is the Benagil Cave so popular (and what do most people miss)?
It’s no surprise people flock here, it’s one of those rare places that actually looks like the photos. Crystal-clear water, layers of warm-colored stone, and light that dances on the cave walls.
But here’s the catch: most visitors take a boat tour, and while that may seem like the easiest way to see it, there’s one major downside… you’re not allowed to get off the boat and explore the cave beach. The entire experience lasts a few minutes, and if there are waves or lots of boats, it can feel more like a traffic jam than a tranquil experience.
The best way to visit: at Sunrise!
After reading reviews and getting advice from locals, we booked this sunrise kayak tour and it was, hands down, the best decision we could’ve made. We met our guide in Carvoeiro before 7am, just as the sun was rising, and paddled out into calm, glassy waters. No crowds. No chaos. Just peace.
As we glided along the coast, we passed through several sea caves and hidden grottos, not just Benagil -and our guide shared stories and geological facts along the way. The early morning light made everything glow. We even saw a rainbow arching across the water. I still get chills thinking about it.
And yes, we got to paddle inside Benagil Cave and actually step onto the sand. No rushing, no shouting over motors, just time to explore, take in the scale of it all, and snap the kind of photos that actually do it justice.
Even with kids (our twins are 8), the kayak experience was manageable and fun, especially with the calm morning seas. I wouldn’t recommend trying it in the afternoon with little ones, though. The ocean gets rougher later in the day, and navigating back can be exhausting.
Pro Tips for the Carvoeiro Benagil Caves right.
- Go early. Like really early. We started before 7am and were back before most tourists even had breakfast.
- Choose kayak over boat tours if you want to enter the cave and explore.
- Book a guided tour (especially if you’re not familiar with the coastline) – it’s safer, easier, and you’ll learn a ton.
- Check the weather. Calm seas make all the difference. Windy days = canceled trips or rough paddling.
- Wear a swimsuit, water shoes, and bring a dry bag for your phone or camera. Most tours provide life jackets and waterproof gear, but it’s good to be prepared.
The Carvoeiro Benagil Cave is breathtaking… but the way you see it makes all the difference. Don’t settle for a quick boat drive-by. Wake up early, grab a paddle, and make it a true adventure. It’s an experience you’ll never forget – and one of our favorite memories from the Algarve.
